A utility knife is a medium sized knife, usually 4" to 7" long, that can be used for a wide range of tasks. Utility knives can either have a plain or serrated blade. Carving knives are long thin knives measuring from 8" to 15" in length. They are thin in order to make thinner more precise slices of poultry, roasts, hams, and other large cooked meats. A slicer has the same general function as a carving knife, however it is typically longer and narrower. Slicers are very flexible making it better for slicing ham or fish. Slicers are occasionally serrated.
